Many thanks to Simon Butler from the Isle of Wight Hockey Club for news of the forthcoming Hockey Festival. Ed
The annual Isle of Wight Hockey Festival, organised by the Isle of Wight Hockey Club, is held this weekend and continues to attract teams from across the country.
The event, which takes place on May 8 & 9, this year features over 25 men’s, ladies’ and mixed teams from many counties.
This year’s event promises to be full of exciting action, fun, laughter and hockey played out on grass pitches at Newport Recreational Ground.
Each team plays up to three games per day, with the first games of the day getting underway at 10.30am.
The focus is firmly on having fun – it’s not often you see a team of men dressed in pirate outfits playing hockey – but it is also a good chance to come along and enjoy the lighter side of the sport while meeting old and new colleagues and teams.
The event is also an ideal opportunity for anyone interested in playing the sport, whatever ability you may be, to come along and meet the Isle of Wight Hockey Club.
There’s a fully stocked hockey shop for any players – old and new – to get the latest equipment, food stalls, licensed bar and ice creams all available.
The Saturday night sees a disco being laid on by the club at a well known Isle of Wight late-night venue.
Isle of Wight Hockey Club Chairman Clive Green said “The festival is a great annual event that continues to help put the Island on the map. It also supports local businesses given many of the teams use local hotels, shops, bars and restaurants.
“We’re certainly one of the most popular festivals because many teams see this as a mini-trip abroad, mainly because they have to board a ferry to get to it, giving the sense of going away somewhere for a weekend.
“Hopefully the weather will be as good as last year and everyone involved will have a great time”
