The Isle of Wight Liberal Democrats have welcomed the news that the Isle of Wight council Executive have agreed to plans to help home refugees and asylum seekers from Syria.
The councils plans which could see up to five families accommodated temporarily, while their asylum applications are processed, has been welcomed by the party’s executive and members, with the hope that the Council will create a convention of helping those feeling war.
High priority for Liberal Democrats
Support for Syrian Refugees has been a high priority for Liberal Democrats nationally and the sentiment is felt even at a local level.
Tom Brown, 19, Isle of Wight Liberal Youth secretary and Liberal Democrat council candidate for next May local council elections, said,
“It is great to see the Isle of Wight council accept such a proposal. These are people who are in need and have very little besides hope for a better future.
“It fills me with joy to see Isle of Wight families possibly opening their own doors to helping people in desperation.
“Understandably, not everyone has the opportunity to help people in need, but whether you are able to through simply donating money and resources to their cause it all helps improve the lives of those who have had theirs destroyed.
“We are a welcoming party and a welcoming Island, and I am glad the council is following that. If we all come together we can achieve great things.”
Mr Brown’s comments were welcomed by the local party and Vice-Chair Nicholas Belfitt who agreed with and reaffirmed the party’s local refugee strategy was in line with federal party.
Mr Belfitt also indicated that Mr Brown’s comments, showed the parties push to get more young people involved in local politics was succeeding.
