Police and Crime Commissioner, Michael Lane has backed an Electoral Commission report that calls for easily accessible information to be made available to the electorate about the role of Police and Crime Commissioner and about the candidates standing.

The Electoral Commission report shows that turnout at the May 2016 Police and Crime Commissioner elections was higher overall than the previous elections in November 2012.

72% in the dark
However, across all areas holding Police and Crime Commissioner elections in England and Wales, fewer than three in ten respondents said they knew either a great deal or a fair amount about them, and 72% said they did not know very much or nothing at all.

Michael Lane said:

“The findings of the Electoral Commission come as no surprise. This is an issue I recognised early on in my campaign to become the Commissioner for Hampshire policing area, and as such, on being elected, I made improving the understanding of the role of Police and Crime Commissioner, and of policing demand, one of my ten pledges to the people I represent.

“This is important, not just to help the electorate make a better informed choice when they next go to the ballots, but also to enable greater public involvement in the work I do to achieve my mission to ‘make you, your family and your community safer’.

“Over the past few months I have been meeting as many residents, stakeholders, partners and community leaders as possible to share with them the extent of my mandate, and to hear their views and debate priorities. It is only by being visible, accessible and accountable that understanding can be improved.”
