Isle of Wight local election: Congratulations and tributes from Island MP

This in from Andrew Turner’s office, in his own words. Ed

The Island’s MP, Andrew Turner has offered his congratulations to all Council and Town and Parish Councillors elected last week.

He also praised those who stood unsuccessfully in the elections.

Mr Turner said today:

“The Island didn’t follow national trends – as ever Islanders made up their own minds. I am personally sorry that the Conservatives have lost the majority on the County Council, but as the Island’s MP I am committed to working with whoever is elected for the good of the Island. There are good councillors who have lost their seats – and I thank them for everything they have done, in some cases over many years. There are also some interesting new faces at County Hall and I look forward to working with councillors of all parties – as well as those not aligned to any political party.

“I also particularly want to pay tribute to those who put themselves forward for election and were unsuccessful. You should only ever take part in an election if you are prepared to lose, but that doesn’t mean being on the losing side is easy.

In my time I have experienced both electoral success and failure so I know it can sometimes be hard to pick yourself up, dust yourself down and keep right on!. But everybody who put themselves forward has played an important part in the democratic process and should be proud of that.”

May this sort of tone be typical of the next 4 years at County Hall.

Sounds like a tasteful f off directed at mr Pugh & a “let’s heal the wounds guys” for the other factions of the Tory party to me. AT has seen the map, with the island split down the middle, Tory west wight & not much in the the east, (2 from Ukip). He has no infantry in the more densely populated areas for the fight in 2yrs… Read more »

My own election was a victory neither for me, nor for the Conservative Party. It was a victory for the people of Newport West who have put party politics behind them and voted for change. Voters of all political parties came together to chose a councillor who can get things done, who can properly represent them and their interests at County Hall and who can, for the… Read more »

If it wasn’t a victory for Chris or the Conservative party, sounds like “the people of Newport West” got the wrong end of the stick entirely. An election in that ward clearly needs to be held again, this time with everyone clear about who they want to win.

not sure I have ever read a post so loaded and meant to mislead. CW knows exactly who and why he was elected and his Tory vote held up where others collapsed. His journery to Tory Island leader is nearly done

CW, you have the first bit right, it was a victory for nobody. Yours was the least inspired ward across the whole island. Questions for you though. You suggest the people of newport collectively put party politics aside, then reassembled themselves into parties and keen for change, selected you. Did you read through the statement before hitting submit, its garbage. Is this the sort of double speak… Read more »

I’m not sure how professional publicist Cllr Whitehouse arrives at his conclusion that people in any numbers were voting Conservative for the first time in their lives. In the last election, in 2009, the conservative candidate in Newport West won 501 votes, or 59 per cent of the total, in a three-way race. This year, Cllr Whitehouse won 295 votes, or 45 per cent of the vote,… Read more »

It always amazes me how many red arrows Chris Whitehouse gets. Is he the new David Pugh?

I don’t know Mr Whitehouse, and he may be a lovely man, but I think statements such as “Voters of all political parties came together to choose a councillor who can get things done” seem a trifle pompous. He may well turn out to be a good county councillor, but in fact the people of Newport West voted for a Conservative in 2009 and again for a… Read more »

Who is Mr Turner trying to kid? Silent and missing in the run up to the council election when his Conservative party colleagues needed him, this statement is totally unconvincing. In a word, cant!
There will be payback in 2015 when he seeks re-election and needs volunteers to support his campaign.

he visisted many of the polling station to support fellow Tories (pleased don’t let that sound like I care an iota for Turner)

he did only stay 10 minutes though

What an inspiring chap Chris Whitehouse must be. Funnily enough, as an Island Independent candidate for Carisbrooke I was using exactly the same language: leave party politics behind and vote for change. Presumably we can now anticipate Mr. Whitehouse voting only according to his ward’s interests and where appropriate his personal conviction in the new council and ignoring the party whip. I also look forward to him… Read more »

Well said. Chris seems to be trying to garner some of the Island Independent stardust for himself! The word ‘shameless’ is beginning to come to mind, and I share Lady in the back’s view that he is indeed shaping up to be ‘the new Pugh’!

There seems to be collective memory loss about our education standards on the Island. They have been amongst the worst in the country for decades, the sad thing is that the reorganisation hasn’t improved the standards yet, but it will. It has revealed that a large part of the problem are the teachers themselves.

Are you assuming standards will improve because some mainland authority will take over?

Actually, part of the problem was that pupils were arriving from Island primary schools with over-inflated grades for achievement. Standards had been improving in the middle schools, and SB and DP knew this, but rather than give it another couple of years to prove fully itself and have an impact on high schools, they pushed on regardless. Know we have a generation of pupils who have been… Read more »
