Readers with a good memory might remember the football challenge we reported on back in January to raise money for Under 15s football team to go to Spain for a tournament. Well they’re there at the moment and doing brilliantly. Ed
The Isle of Wight Schools Under 15s football team have had a great start to their trip to Spain to compete in the Donosti Cup.
Drawn in a group with an Australian and two Spanish sides, they won both their first matches, beating the Australians 4 nil and the first of the Spanish teams 3 nil.
Success for the start
In the first match on Monday Jordy Galsworthy scored twice, Alex Wright and Jack Wederkopp scored one each. Luke Flux nearly made it 5 with a header that hit the cross bar.
On Tuesday, playing against a local Spanish team, the boys had to pull out all the stops – local sides have traditionally dominated the tournament and were expected to take the trophy again.
However, the Island boys were on a high and played some of their best football with goals from Jack England’s head, Jack Wederkopp and James Fretwell.
These results leave The Island Schools team 3 points clear at the top of their group.
