Students at the Mock Trials

Isle of Wight students shine in legal system showcase despite stormy conditions

The annual schools Mock Trials Competition was held on Saturday 7th December, despite the horrendous travelling conditions and huge disruption to the ferries.

This annual event has become a firm fixture in the schools’ calendars and has resulted in over 70 Island students deciding to take up a career in law. Not to mention the thousands of young Islanders who have been able to experience exactly how our world renowned legal system works in practice.

Started by Nick Hayward, when he was High Sheriff in 2012, the team of retired and working judges, magistrates, police, teachers and students, worked tirelessly this year to ensure this important event took place in spite of the storm.

Incredibly high standard of performance
Ryde School were the overall winners taking home the beautiful Rouse Ltd., glass trophy, which was presented to them by the current High Sheriff, Graham Biss DL BEM. Every school, student and  teacher deserves praise for the incredibly high standard of performance.

The event which gives young people experience of the way the law of the land works in practice enables, thanks to the generosity of the Island courts, students to stand up and act out a real trial.

A team effort
Saturday was particularly difficult and everyone needs congratulating simply for making the effort to get to the event, sponsored by Rouse Ltd., and supported by Duxmore Botanics and Goddard’s Brewery.

The legal team along with Nick Hayward all work throughout the year, visiting the schools to ensure young Islanders get the best possible experience out of the day in court.

So Ryde School’s victory was very much a team effort.
