The Isle of Wight Symphony Orchestra is busy preparing for an exciting new concert series at Medina Theatre, Newport, this winter.
The first concert of the season is on Saturday 17th November starting at the new time of 7.15pm. The concert will open with the popular Overture to “The Merry Wives of Windsor” by Otto Nicolai. This will be followed by Schumann’s famous piano concerto with soloist Christopher Guild.
Sought after artist
It is a welcome return to the Island for Christopher as he wowed the Island audience as the piano soloist in the Piano and Trumpet concerto by Shostakovitch in March 2010.
Christopher is a sought after artist, often performing with the top London Orchestras, as well as giving solo recitals around the country, performing at the Wigmore Hall, South Bank Centre and on the radio.
The first concert will conclude with Rachmaninov’s melodious 1st Symphony.
Looking forward to 2013
The second concert on the 26th January 2013 again sees another popular soloist return to the Island to perform with the IWSO.
Alexander Sitkovetsky has previously treated us to fantastic performances of the Beethoven and Mendlessohn Violin Concerti with IWSO. For this concert he returns to perform the 2nd Violin Concerto by Shostakovitch.
Alexander continues to be much in demand in the concert halls of the UK and Europe. He has also recently performed in New York. He has recorded as a soloist for both EMI and Decca.
This second concert will also include the epic 5th Symphony by Sibelius.
The IWSO series
In total there are five concerts in the IWSO series. Other highlights include Elgar’s “Sea Pictures”, “Der Rosenkavalier suite” by Richard Strauss and “Invitation to the Dance” by Weber.
The orchestra does operate a season ticket system for all concerts. This allows the holder to have the same guaranteed seat at a reduced price. This year season ticket holders will also be eligible to a free programme at each concert.
