The Mail Online carried an article yesterday revealing the Isle of Wight as the ‘Welfare Capital’ of the UK.
But it has nothing to do with the number of people out of work, or on low incomes.
The reason for the new title is due to the number of pensioners living on the Island. Apparently if you remove the state pension from the total figure, the Isle of Wight is way down on the league table.
Valuable contribution
Of course, it’s very well documented that pensioners on the Island contribute a huge amount to community life, many getting involved with valuable voluntary work.
