Isle of Wight women urged to attend vital cervical screening appointments

Women on the Isle of Wight are being reminded about the importance of attending their cervical screening appointments.

The NHS cervical screening programme regularly invites women aged between 25 and 64 for screenings.

These screenings play a crucial role in reducing the occurrence of invasive cervical cancer.

Cervical screening helps to identify early signs of abnormal changes. This early detection can significantly lower the annual mortality rate associated with the disease.

2023-24 data
Data from NHS Digital showed that during 2023-24 in the 25-49 year old age group on the Isle of Wight, 18,921 women were eligible and 13,490 were screened.

For the 50-64 age group 15,085 women were eligible and 10,767 were screened.

Booking and receiving results
Women who are eligible receive an invitation letter from their GP or health service. Booking a screening is straightforward, with options available either through the surgery’s online appointment system or by calling their practice directly.

Following the screening, results are sent to the patients. In most cases, these results arrive within two weeks of the appointment.
