Ugly Ozo, a new alt-rock band led by Isle of Wight native Jess Baker and her younger sister Boo, is set to release their debut single, “Remains,” on 21st August via Strong Island Recordings.
The single delves into intense themes of feminine rage, revenge, and supernatural horrors, with a sonic style reminiscent of the Breeders and Pretty Sick.
Empowering yet unnerving
Jess Baker describes Ugly Ozo’s music as leaving listeners, “feeling empowered, bewitched, and ultimately a bit freaked out.”
Mixed by Guy Page (Coach Party), the track “Remains” tells a story of betrayal and retribution, inspired by personal experiences. Baker explains that the song captures the emotional journey of confronting someone who has wronged her and reclaiming power.
The haunting melodies, combined with eerie surf guitars, create a cathartic release as the song explores the theme of revenge against both the perpetrator and his allies.
The accompanying music video further enhances the song’s dark themes, featuring occult imagery such as church altars, grave digging, tarot cards, and candles arranged in ritualistic circles.
A rising presence on the UK live circuit
Ugly Ozo has been steadily gaining attention on the UK live music scene over the past year. Known for their energetic performances, often with Jess Baker donning fairy wings, the band recently played at the Isle of Wight Festival in June.
Their debut single comes at a time when the band is gaining momentum, with recent shows alongside artists such as Sunfruits, Hotel Lux, Shelf Lives, The Pill, and ELLiS·D.
UK Tour and upcoming performances
Following a series of dates supporting Lauran Hibberd last autumn, Ugly Ozo will embark on their largest UK tour to date this September. The tour will see the band supporting Hibberd across nine UK dates, with performances in cities including Manchester, Glasgow, and London.
In addition to the tour, the band has several other notable live dates scheduled, including a support slot for Skating Polly in Brighton on 13th October and a headline show in Portsmouth on 12th November.
