On Friday we received a rather lovely email from a young Ventnor lad called Jack Whitewood.
He said some very kind things about Ventnorblog and went on to ask, very politely, whether it would be possible for us to highlight something on the blog for him.
Well, after reading what he’s been up to how could we refuse? Rather than rewrite it, here are his own words …
I am a year eleven pupil at Medina High School and since the beginning of this year I have been producing a play which I have written myself; entitled ‘The Bench in the Park’. The project has involved around twenty five students and everything from acting, set design and construction, soundtrack recording, artwork and technical roles are being performed by students. The final production is at Medina Theatre on April 26th & 27th at 7:30pm.
The full length play follows the fictional story of a family separated by evacuation and conscription during the Second World War. It highlights the effects of the blitz on domestic lives during this period and the changing relationships between the characters. The project has had very little staff involvement and this has given us the opportunity to completely create our own work. We have had to work to a budget, arrange sponsorship, record music, work with theatre staff and of course it has given me the opportunity to write my own script.
I am writing to inquire as to whether i could place an advert or a small article on the Ventnor Blog as I feel this is a great website with the audience we are aiming at. I am a resident in Ventnor and I feel the VentnorBlog is a great way of communicating to the rest of the community.
Thank you very much for your time.
I’m sure you’ll agree that it sounds pretty impressive. It fills me with great warmth when I hear about things like this. So often kids of Jacks age give up on life and can think of nothing better to do than spend their spare time hanging out at the bus station or such like.
It’s true that we should see the youth clubs open more often and more services provided for kids, particularly in rural areas, but what a lot of these kids need to realise is that you can’t have everything given to you on a plate. Life is what you make it.
Jack and his mates are testament to this – they’ve got off their backsides and done something positive with their time.
I can’t wait to see the result of their hard work and I hope that you’ll make the effort to show your support on 26th or 27th April for these 26 kids who’ve worked so hard.
Well done Jack … you and your friends deserve great praise for your hard work.
