Budding palaeontologists welcome at Celebrating Dinosaur Island Conference

At the end of next week an International Conference is being held in Southampton and on the Isle of Wight that has Dinosaur Island as the theme.

The Jehol-Wealden International Conference takes place at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton on Friday 20th September and at Dinosaur Isle in Sandown the following day (Saturday 21st).

Experts from UK and China will be presenting the results of their recent research, including keynotes from Chinese palaeontologists.

Iconic ‘first dinosaur’ found on the Island
Dr Gareth Dyke, who some of you may know from Cafe Scientifique sessions, is Senior Lecturer in Vertebrate Palaeontology at the University of Southampton. He said:

“The famous Iguanodon sacrum examined by Richard Owen and figured in 1849 was originally found at Brook on the Isle of Wight in 1825.

“This specimen is the iconic ‘first dinosaur’.”

How to take part
Members of the public are invited to attend the talks at the National Oceanography Centre (lecture theatre) in Southampton on 20th September.

A complete list of speakers taking part in the sessions can be found online.

There’s no fee, just turn up and absorb the amazing knowledge being presented.

There is a fee for the second day of the conference, which is £50 per person.

This includes two fossil walks, a reception at Dinosaur Isle, a ride on the chairlift and an evening reception at the Needles Park.
