Isle of Wight charity, Independent Arts, is running a series of creative heritage workshops around the history of Newport’s ‘Beast’ market as part of the Renew Newport project, funded by Historic England.
The next session will take place on Saturday 4th December from 2-4pm at the Creative Hub, 48 High Street, Newport.
During the session there will be an opportunity to make your own goose and learn about the history of the animal market.
‘Goose Fayre’
The project will culminate in the ‘Goose Fayre’ where the geese will be brought to market in St James Square at on Saturday 11th December and our auctioneer and market goers will bring the Victorian market to life between 11am and noon.
Community Engagement Manager, Hannah Griffiths, said,
“We’ve got a wonderful opportunity to share some of Newport’s wide and varied history as part of the Renew Newport project and spread a little Christmas joy too.
“We hope to have lots of beautiful geese to bring to market and hope lots of people come along.”
