Children cycling:

Great news for young Islanders as Junior Cycle Club returns

Thanks to Tim for sharing news of this exciting cycling opportunity for young Islanders. Ed

Each session of the Junior Cycling Club will contain a mixture of fun and and skill elements. It is hoped to to cover various types of cycling, such as mountain biking, cyclocross and road racing.

Children attending can also work towards Bikeability certification which will give them the skills to learn how to ride on the road. It is hoped that at a later stage to enlist children of all ages.

Saturday morning sessions
The new club will meet over the next three months on six Saturday mornings at schools around the Island. The Sports Development Unit and the Road Safety Team from the Council are lending their expertise to support the initiative.

In the future it is hoped to be as successful as the previous club, which ran for many years, with up to 50 children attending sessions.

Alec Broome from the Sports Development Unit said, “To begin with we hope we can attract 20 children or so and build from there.”

How much and how to join?
Each session will cost £2. Anyone without a bike can still attend and will be lent one with a helmet. Some of the cost has been subsidised by a grant from Sport Hampshire and Isle of Wight.

Anyone interested in attending should ring Alec Broome 823818 or email [email protected]

“This is a very exciting prospect. The group have been looking at ways to revive this idea and so it is very satisfying that the opportunity has arisen.”
