Keith Fagan, who has chaired the Bembridge Library Users’ Group (BLUG) since its formation in February to fight the closure of Bembridge Library has stepped down owing to business pressures.
Keith made an immense contribution over the past five months and without his determination and tenacity, ensured BLUG had a voice, and represented the views of library users and the wider Bembridge community.
“Leaving you in very capable hands”
In a statement to all volunteers and supporters, issued on Monday, Keith said that it was with regret he has had to resign as Chairman of BLUG.
“Growing business pressures have forced me to take this decision. I leave you in the very capable hands of Peter and Richard who continue to work tirelessly for all of us,” said Keith.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support and the hard work that has gone in to building an infrastructure to run the library.”
A formidable adversary
Richard Beet, who works for BLUG as media officer, said that Keith’s dedication and single-minded approach made an impression on everyone he dealt with, and the Isle of Wight Council knew they had a formidable adversary. BLUG’s volunteer co-ordinator Peter Pickworth said that Keith’s contribution would be greatly missed.
BLUG has been assessing a draft full-repairing long-term lease for the library building in Church Road, Bembridge and will shortly be responding to IWC with comments following submissions from independent solicitors, accountants and business people.
The group continues to support the legal challenge to stop library closures on the Isle of Wight, and welcomes the High Court judgement last week to allow the challenge to move forward to a Judicial Review.
