Labour Councillor To Reveal Alternative Budget

As has been the norm for the last four years, Labour Isle of Wight Councillor Geoff Lumley, will next week reveal his alternative budget.

Geoff LumleyDubbing it ‘The Peoples Budget’, he claims that it will “seek to retain the most-valued Council services in their entirety, such as libraries, lifeguards and public conveniences”.

He goes on to say that essential public services such as those for children and young people, as well as vulnerable adults in need of care, will have their funding restored.

Cllr Lumley said, “I wasn’t going to do much more than submit amendments to the Tory budget this year. However, after four successive year’s of producing alternative budgets, a lot of Islander’s now expect an alternative from me. So in response to a lot of pressure I will submit my alternative for public consideration next Friday morning.”

Look out on VB for Cllr Lumley’s budget next Friday (18th February) the day before a mass rally in Newport is planned against the current Tory administration’s budget cuts.

I would be intrigued to know where Geoff is going to find 17 millions worth of real savings and no cuts anywhere.

Presumably cuts to senior council members salaries/consultants & contractor costs. This would mean keeping the ‘workers’ with a middle management structure who should adequately be able to manage the infratructure to deliver essential services. We have to provide services to residents, but also the tourists who keep this ‘island afloat’ economically. What would be the saving if free bus services were only provided to island residents, and… Read more »

Disillusioned,

Do you not realize that thousands of OAP visit the mainland. This is the UK.

Thousands of OAP’s who wouldn’t mind paying for the bus service, especially if it was a reduced rate. I deal with a lot of tourists, mainly elderly, and most are surprised that they get free bus travel. Many arrive by car and it doesn’t move during their stay! Because people are OAP’s does not mean that hey do not have money to spend.

Concessionary fares is a government scheme and the Island cannot restrict thisto Islanders, who can use their passes on the mainland.
IOW Council can enhance it, as they used to by allowing Island residents to use their passes before 0930 and as they still do allow Islanders to use the train free (after 0930)

in reality he doesn’t, as the governments budget cut is only £7million this year…the other £10m is this councils own cock up and should not be foisted on the people

My press release also said I “will reveal how this £4m services rescue package will be funded when ‘The Peoples Budget’ is issued next Friday.” That’s £4m restoration of the £17.8m the Tory Council will be cutting – £7m of which is down to government funding cuts. I’m not a miracle worker !

How about reducing the number of IOW councillors from 43 to say 23? The sum of 4 and 2.5 million comes from the Islands budget? Or has it been borrowed? If borrowed, for that purpose, it can not be used in the conventional way. I do not suppose, for one moment, that the council are looking to their contractors for a reduction in their fees. I heard… Read more »

No wonder they fill in the holes in wet weather and don’t tamp them down too hard. That way they only last a month and provide a nice steady income stream.

How about saving £4m by cutting/delaying/reducing the County Hall refurbishment? Not the right time for this and if jobs are going, less office space should be needed. Very, very bad timing…

In addition they should look at what Birmingham is doinf they are building a brand new library in… Read more »

If you cancel the £4m for refurbishing County Hall and the £2.5m for refurbishing the Heights Leisure Centre, there’s £6.5m saved already.

cancel the roads PFI save £300,000 + a year in wages and actually spend the £8.5m budgetted for roads on doing the job rather than just leave it and run up £1000’s in compensation claims for vehicle damage

“We must set a balanced budget” they tell us.

Do they mention that one which uses reserves can still be a balanced budget? (Ask DB Consulting Ltd.)

Remind me… what was the sum of Reserves and Balances when the tories came in?

Saving £4m not refirbishing county hall is a one off saving. As is £2.5 million from the heights. A balanced budget must not just take into account that money will be cut this year, but that we will not get that money back next year. Saving a one off amount will not help with the ongoing budget. I do hope Geoff can identify savings in management or… Read more »

Spending £4 million on partitions and paint in County Hall is laughable, or would be if it were not happening. It may not save services year after year, but it’s a good indicator of competence, or lack of it and of course, is but one example.

im not saying that the £4 million will be money well spent. Simply that not spending it will likely provide only a temporary reprieve to a limited number of services.

I too wish to make an alternative budget proposal. As we approach the Valentine’s day anniversary of our council leader’s famous foul-mouthed outburst, I find myself wondering whether anybody would be prepared to make a charitable contribution to a swear box collection to mark the event, as by doing so it may be possible for us to assist our council to save one or more of our… Read more »

Let’s hope that mr. Lumley’ budget includes a sum to actually promote the Island. Example: come to the Isle of Wight where your children can be safe and play on lifeguard protected beaches, where public toilets are maintained to the highest standard, where you can visit any one of our excellent libraries when the weather is bad, where we have actually reduced car parking charges to actually… Read more »

The root cause of all these spending cuts is the mess this and the last Governments got into by letting the banks and the public borrow money on a vast scale in a pyramid type scheme over the past 30 years. When the scheme collapsed all politicians and bankers are trying to deny responsibility and we the people pick up the vast bill-and the bankers and politicians… Read more »

These cuts are causing devastation all over the UK, although our cuts are made worse by the IOW council’s incompetence and mismanagement. It is grossly unfair that the bankers who got us into this mess are earning incredibly high salaries and rewarding themselves millions in bonuses. We keep getting told that there is no alternative to these cuts but there are: reform and tax the banks; collect… Read more »

Well done Geoff- looking forward to this. It must also be remembered- that effecting the cuts costs money and staff time as well as the ridiculous politically inspired process of doing away with many effective regional regulators yet requiring audit and procedure to now be sent to various departmental and re-named and selectively politically re-staffed ones to carry out the same statutory duties. What should be of… Read more »
