Land Based Wind Turbines A Winner For Lib Dems

As reported yesterday, last night Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, Simon Hughes MP, met with Island Liberal Democrats to hear a presentation by experts in renewable energy fields.

Wind Turbines A Winner For Lib DemsFollowing the presentations and discussions, Island Liberal Democrats agreed last night to support proposals for land based wind turbines on the Island. Not only this but they also agreed that the “Island could be an unparalleled centre of excellence for research, development, experimentation and implementation of renewable energy systems.”

We’re told that presentations were made on viability of wind, wave, hydro, solar, gasification and anaerobic digesters.

Jill Wareham, Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate, said “we feel passionate about our Island, our young people and the future of our planet. We believe the Council’s vision of Eco Island is just that – a vision; their target of 10% renewable by 2010 is way off the mark. Our members agreed last evening on a number of proposals which include supporting wind turbines on the Island plus the development and implementation of other renewable technologies.

“We were really pleased to welcome Simon Hughes MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, back to the Island for the second time in less than a month. Simon visited the Island during the Vestas’ workers protest and met both management and workers so understands the wind turbine issues for the Island. Simon gave us the national perspective and is fully supportive of our proposals.

“In order to meet the challenges of climate change, fossil fuels running out and the knowledge that our gas and oil supplies coming from unreliable sources we recognise the need to take action urgently.”
