Large Crack Appears At Ventnor Pumping Station (video)

Last night whilst down on Ventnor seafront, our eagle-eyed daughter spotted a large crack around the base of the pumping station.

part of large It started at the path and ran for several feet around the west side of the pumping station. We inspected it closer with one of the coastguards who were doing some training nearby and we both came to conclusion that it seemed like a very fresh crack.

No cause for concern say Southern Water
We got in touch with Southern Water, who built and manage the pumping station, this morning to ask if whether it was something that we needed to worry about.

A Southern Water spokesman said, “We are aware of a crack in the surface of the concrete at our pumping station in Ventnor but we don’t believe it is a cause for concern.

“The geology of the area means Ventnor is renowned for cracks appearing in buildings because of ground movement.

“The pumping station was built with this in mind and to all the relevant design specifications but because of the high levels of ground movement, surface cracks like this are inevitable.

“We have asked a specialist engineer to investigate the exact cause and to see if anything needs to be done.”

Video footage of the crack
The photo above doesn’t really give an idea of the length of the crack, so our daughter shot a short video to give you more of an idea.
