According to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), the percentage of waste sent for re-use, recycling and composting (RRC) on the Isle of Wight has increased to 48.01 per cent up until March 2014, compared to 46.21 per cent for the same period last year.
The amount of waste sent to landfill in the same period has also improved, down 32.36 per cent compared to 36.94 per cent in 2013.
The figures show the Isle of Wight Council is in the top third of the 355 authorities in England for recycling and diverting waste from landfill and confirms the Island is well on course to achieve a national target of 50 per cent of waste sent for RRC by 2020.
In the top 20 authorities for the amount of carbon recycled
There is further good news for the Island in a separate report by Eunomia Research & Consulting. Called the “Recycling Carbon Index – England, Wales and Northern Island Local Authorities 2012/13”, the report puts the Isle of Wight Council amongst the top 20 authorities for the amount of carbon it recycles. The report rates each authority against the carbon savings achieved by recycling per person, thus allowing an effective comparison between authorities.
The figures reflect the significant improvement in the level of recycling collected from households since the new collection service was introduced in January 2012.

Executive member for sustainability, environment and public realm, Cllr Luisa Hillard, said:
“These two sets of results confirm the commitment and effort made by both the council and many residents on the Island to improve recycling rates and divert more of our waste away from landfill.
“This is a good start and we will continue improving even further to ensure that we meet national targets set by government in future years.”
