Letter: Calls for Conservative suspension in line with education policies amid betting probe

OnTheWight always welcomes a Letter to the Editor to share with our readers – unsurprisingly they don’t always reflect the views of this publication. If you have something you’d like to share, get in touch and of course, your considered comments are welcome below.

This from Peter Shreeve, Assistant District Secretary, Treasurer and Press Officer, Isle of Wight – National Education Union. Ed

As more Conservative members are investigated by the Gambling Commission over alleged bets on the timing of the General Election, one member said to me,

“One law for the rich, another for the poor.”

Another said,

“Grossly unfair considering how things are handled in schools.”

Robust policies
As a union caseworker I find myself agreeing. It’s not unusual for an accusation, not yet fully proven, to lead to a swift informal investigative chat. If concerns are high, the accused individual can be sent home suspended, isolated from their normal work life and colleagues.

If the Conservative party – the party of Government – had robust policies like education, all these individuals should have been suspended until their cases were concluded.

Oscar Wilde would have had a field day
If still alive, Oscar Wilde would have had a field day writing a new farcical play: The Importance of Being a Conservative Gambler.

To maybe lose a parliamentary private secretary standing in Montgomeryshire, may be regarded as a misfortune; to maybe lose a second standing in Bristol North West, looks like carelessness.

To lose a third reckless; to lose a fourth, the party’s chief data officer self-destructive.

When will the farce end?
Knowing the Gambling Commission has identified ‘other people of interest’, it’s hard to see how this farce will end.
