Letter: Warning to MP over NHS privatisation now a reality

We always welcome a Letter to the Editor to share with our readers – unsurprisingly they don’t always reflect the views of this publication. If you have something you’d like to share, get in touch and of course, your considered comments are welcome below. This open letter from Mark Lansbury, Newchurch to Isle of Wight Conservative MP, Andrew Turner. Ed

Dear Mr Turner

In at least two meeting with you over the last few years I warned of the privatization of the NHS. This you denied claiming privatization was not the reason for the top down re-organisation of the NHS (the reorganisation violating your own Tory manifesto).

Now over £1billion in back office NHS services for GPs is on the block with arms dealer, Lockheed Martin, in the process along with ‘corrupt’ G4S and other multinational, greedy, inhuman corporations. This is an appalling betrayal of UK citizens, voters, NHS employees and patients.

A quote from an article in the Independent:

“[It is] just as shocking that no NHS organisation was allowed to bid to provide these services, which are mainly back office support for General Practice,” said Dr Irvine, who is standing the general election for the National Health Action Party. “NHS administration systems, with years of experience, are being displaced by organisations that have little or no experience in providing these services.”

You gave your word this wouldn’t happen.

It has been happening and continues to.

What actions, specifically, will you be taking to make good on your promises?

I look forward to your prompt response.

Best regards,
Mark Lansbury

oh come on…Turner is a Tory, whose ideology includes privatising the NHS and destruction of public services.

Why would he care

I applaud your letter Mark. I, too, have written to Andrew Turner seeking the same assurances as you do and was told the same thing – that the Tories are not privatizing the NHS, despite the myriad evidence to the contrary. I also challenged him to support C;live Efford’s Bill tomorrow (Friday 21st) which seeks to reverse the Coalition’s privatization agenda. You can see the exchange on… Read more »

It’s semantics. When conservatives have said “we are not privatising the NHS” what they mean is it will remain Free At The Point Of Delivery. Which really is a hollow promise. Lots of things are free at the point of delivery – including sofas on credit and my pizza in the Italian restaurant. It doesn’t mean I won’t have to pay for them. The conservatives have failed… Read more »

Well put Vix. The Tories realised in (was it?) M.Thatcher’s time the approbrium that rained down on them when they openly espoused NHS privatisation, and the disadvantage this gave them v. Blair, so they’ve since been conducting the process behind a thin curtain instead. I hope Labour and Lib-Dems want to maintain the NHS in the public sector, in which case we will have another chance soon… Read more »

I agree with that – providing services is something which the NHS ought to be doing exclusively. When I read about cataract operations being carried out by private contractors who not only shouted at patients but then made a mess of the operation, I thought of my mother, who had such an operation a while ago – she’s very nervous about anything to do with her eyes,… Read more »

There is an awful symmetry about arms manufacturers Lockheed-Martin dipping into profiteering out of NHS privatisation: They make money out of creating casualties and then make more money out of healing them. No better example exists of the true nature of privatisation: Profit before people. It shows the urgent need for this anti-social behaviour to be stopped. What we are in danger of is a global version… Read more »

When I was a child I remember the Doctors “Agent” knocking on our door every Friday night (Pay Day) to collect 1½d per person, 9d in all, just in case we needed a doctor. What a struggle my mother had to pay it. Drugs what few were available were extra. It did not include Hospital visits or “Specialists” for that we relied on charity. My brother had… Read more »

Smithy, I’ve disagreed with you elsewhere, but was very moved by this post and thank you for it, for reminding us of what we stand to lose.

Smithy, your recollections spark mine. Our family used my grandmother’s chemist’s prescription for “tummy trouble”. Going to the doctor cost money. So, you might have had indigestion… or stomach cancer. Gran’s powder had to do. My parents were used to having to do home medication. Aged four, I had an ear infection. That’s what we’d call it now. Then, it was “a bit of ear ache”. Nothing… Read more »

The Conservatives knew we would be happy with privatisation of road maintenance when they landed us with IslandRoads and they will presumably try to convince us that Totalhealthcare Ltd will also do a good job.

Knowing the price of everything, but the value of nothing!

Karen writes: “We have an excellent team of staff who help us maintain our buildings and land in the best possible condition”(which still includes the former health centre at East Cowes, which is now far from being in the best possible condition).”Isle of Wight NHS Trust has a ground breaking strategic estates partnership agreement with Ryhurst to deliver a wide-ranging estates strategy…we have recognised that we need… Read more »

The Trust’s local expertise is hardly likely to include estate management given the nature of the estate we’ve got at the St Mary’s site, is it? And what and where are these “massed ranks of expensive management” – not at St Mary’s. (One way to reduce management would be to abolish the provider/commissioner split – which we ought to do although the EU wouldn’t like it: it… Read more »

Anyone else remember the Saunders Roe SR71 jet fighter? This failed to get the NATO contract (& jobs in Cowes) despite being the best aircraft in competition with the Lockheed Starfighter. This was such a bad aircraft they were called the “Widowmaker”. With its short stubby wings, if you cut the engine it fell like a brick. The only reason Lockheed got the contract was by large… Read more »

Hopefully everyone commenting will be able to make the public meeting on Wednesday evening? It seems fine to have lots of scrutiny panels, and meetings behind closed doors, but these councillors & NHS personnel, need to be aware of the public’s concerns & the public need to be informed in the first place & a platform to able to voice these worries, these decisions will effect each… Read more »
