teenager getting a vaccination

Letter: Why is it impossible to book a second dose Covid vaccine for 12 to 15-year-olds on the Isle of Wight?

OnTheWight always welcomes a Letter to the Editor to share with our readers – unsurprisingly they don’t always reflect the views of this publication. If you have something you’d like to share, get in touch and of course, your considered comments are welcome below.

This from a News OnTheWight reader who would prefer for their name to be withheld and known as “a vaccinated parent”. Ed

Why has it been impossible to book a second dose Covid vaccine for 12 to 15-year-olds on the Isle of Wight?

When I try to book for my daughter, I am offered a vaccination in Salisbury or at variety of other mainland locations.  All locations offered are clinics specifically for the 12 to 15-year-old age group.  She is eligible for her second jab tomorrow.

Jab before next term?
How are aged 12 to 15-year-old children supposed to receive their second jab before next term, as the Government has stated, if we can’t book any?

Boris Johnson said in his 15th December press conference,

“… let’s all make sure our children and young people are vaccinated before they go back next term.”

The NHS Website states,

“All eligible 12-15s will be able to book their all-important second jab online if they had their first dose more than twelve weeks ago…”

My daughter is keen to be vaccinated
When I also visited Westridge I was told 12 to 15-year-olds are not being accepted at walk in sessions.

My daughter is keen to be vaccinated, both for her benefit and for others. She enjoys attending school and wants to be safe and vaccinated before she goes back in January.

Won’t it be too late?
Are there going to be separate 12 to 15-year-old clinics? Can 12 to 15-year-olds get their first doses currently?

Given that it takes a few weeks for vaccines to take full effect, if they have immunisations administered at school, won’t that be too late?

Our children are being let down
Let us hope the Isle of Wight Clinical Commissioning Group takes action and allows 12-15 year olds to get their second jabs right now, and that the available clinics are well publicised.

Boscombe nearest available slot
Just to add to my frustration I get this letter encouraging me to book a second dose vaccination. Nearest available slot is now Boscombe.

News OnTheWight asked the Isle of Wight Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) earlier this week how 12 to 15-year-olds could get vaccinated. This was the response:

“Further details about how 12-15year olds can obtain second doses will be shared in due course once details have been finalised.

This will be communicated with you once ready.”
