‘Long to Reign: Jubilee on Screen’ launches at Quay Arts Centre this week

Quay Arts has resumed presenting films in the Anthony Minghella Theatre to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee.

Long to Reign: Jubilee on Screen is a series of eight British feature films showcasing the changes in British society from 1952 through to the 2020s.

REIGN celebrations
The film series is part of the Quay Arts Reign celebration featuring an eclectic collection of royal relevant art, memorabilia, film and signage.

The films, curated by Eugene Dugan-Brause, the Arts and Strategy Manager at Quay Arts, offer a mix of topics, styles, and ratings, from PG to 18.

Dugan-Brause: The films reflect the attitudes of those times
Dugan-Brause explains,

“The films in this series contain words and references which reflect the attitudes of those times during the 70-year reign, and which may be considered sensitive, offensive or inappropriate today.

“The series aims to bring those changes to the fore and use them to take a light-hearted look at where we have come from and where we are today.”

Coming up this week
Showing on Tuesday night (17th May), A Taste of Honey, now rated PG, received an X rating and was banned in several countries when it was released in 1961 because this comic drama’s protagonist is a pregnant schoolgirl befriended by a gay art student. And it was the first British film to contain an interracial kiss.

And on Wednesday night (18th) we are dipping into the swinging 70s is Frenzy, Alfred Hitchcock’s penultimate film. This masterful crime thriller is sprinked with both horror and the humourous moments for which Hitchcock was well loved.
