Back in April, following the abolition of the £75 Residents’ Parking Permit, the Isle of Wight council launched a £500 per annum parking permit.
We thought it would be interesting to find out how many of these permits were taken up, since the launch and now.
The decision last week by the council to introduce a new residents’ parking permit in January 2011 was welcome news for those who found the £500 pa. one too expensive.
This came after the Cabinet and Full Council were informed that the “latest budget monitoring projection is showing a potential under achievement of up to a £1m on parking income“.
So just how many people were willing to fork out for the £500 pa permit?
Low take up of permits
Based on the figures provided by the council, we found that 400 residents bought a three month permit for £135.
The six month permit for £260 was purchased by 195 residents and the yearly permit, costing £500 was snapped up by 253 people.
This came to a grand total of just £231,200 for the Isle of Wight Council. Obviously well below the expectations of parking revenue.
The new permit being launched in January will only be for those who live 200m from a car park, and is intended to help those who have no off street parking, rather than those using their car for work or shopping.
