When looking for an image to accompany the previous article, I came across that photo of musicians sitting round a table playing all manner of instruments in an Irish pub – not quite the Isle of Wight, but it was late so I gave up looking and plumped for that one.
Anyway, it took me back to stories from my Dad, of good old sing songs in the pubs back home in Cork and then reminded me that coming up soon at The Quay, in association with Vaguely Sunny, is one of Scotland’s foremost Gaelic singers, Maeve Mackinnon.
Born in Glasgow, and with Skye and Swedish ancestry, her profile is rising fast on the folk scene with her fresh and contemporary interpretations of Gaelic and non-Gaelic material. Rock, latin, bluegrass and reggae elements have all helped to shape her musical tastes.
Islands seem to be a theme for Maeve who started singing as a young child, but it was really summer holidays on the Isle of Jura that cemented Maeve’s appreciation of traditional music.
The west coast and Irish music traditions have always been strong on Jura, and Maeve was encouraged to sing at ceilidhs and parties. In terms of repertoire, Maeve believes in drawing from the Gaelic, Scots and Irish song traditions without segregating.
Joining Maeve in the cafe on Good Friday will be guitarist, fiddler and composer Innes Watson.
Maeve currently lives on the Isle of Skye, so how about some Islanders welcoming her to our Island?
