Medina Film Studios: Proposed development to boost Isle of Wight economy with 100s of new jobs

Plans for a new major film studio on the Isle of Wight — Medina Film Studios — are progressing well, with a planning application now open to public consultation.

Although plans for a new film studio were first announced in November 2022, there has been very little news of the plans since then. The public consultation brings with it anticipation for what many believe will the a game changer for the Island.

The plans
The application is for the creation of new film and TV studios including four sound stages, two workshops and production support facilities. A supporting statement for the planning application reads,

Built on 6.5 Hectares of river frontage Medina Film Studios will be home to the Island’s first screen-based media hub. Digitally advanced, and futureproofed, Medina Film Studios will provide the ability for productions to base themselves on the Island and take advantage of its wonderful locations. Situated close to one of the island’s major ports, on the banks of the Medina River, this studio facility will integrate the latest camera workflow technology into its network together with cutting-edge cyber security protection.

The proposed scheme aims to deliver an alternative form of employment related development with far reaching economic, cultural and social benefits.

The plans add,

The facilities at Medina Studios will provide the key to unlock a treasure trove of cinematic potential. Medina Studios will not only function as weather cover to support the production schedule but can also draw upon a plethora of unused locations, on its doorstep, ready to support a multitude of scripted content.

Job creation
In terms of job creation, the application claims,

The number of jobs created by any one production can vary however, at this stage it is estimated in the region of circa. 400 direct FTE jobs in the film and production sector will be created. In addition to this, the Proposed Development is expected to create up to circa. 150 direct and indirect jobs during the construction phase (over two phases).

Further to the above, the Proposed Development will also generate substantial supply chain benefits with an estimated 250 FTE indirect jobs supported through an extensive range of skills and expertise required to support film and TV production being as a result of secondary and tertiary spend. This will range from the patronage of local shops, restaurants, hotels and timber merchants to the demand for specialist services such as costume designers and make-up artists.
