Met Office wind warning for Isle of Wight as gusts up to 70mph possible on Friday

Expect disruption to travel plans on Friday morning as the Met Office warns of a period of strong winds across much of the South, including the whole of the Isle of Wight.

Valid from midnight on Thursday 22nd until midday on Friday 23rd October 2026, the warning reads:

Strong west to northwesterly winds may spread across southern parts of England and Wales on Friday.

Gusts of 50-60 mph are possible and some coastal or exposed areas could see 70 mph or more, but at this time there is uncertainty in where the strongest winds will be.

There will be some periods of heavy rain which will make travel more difficult.

Whilst it will remain breezy the winds will probably ease late morning into the early afternoon.

What should I expect?

  • There is a slight chance of some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs
  • There is a small chance of injuries and danger to life from flying debris
  • There is a small chance of longer journey times or cancellations as road, rail, air and ferry services are affected
  • There is a small chance that some roads and bridges could close
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage
  • There is a small chance that injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties
