Concern about the safety of a man who went missing from Newport’s St Mary’s Hospital led Cowes RNLI lifeboat making a detailed search of the upper reaches of the River Medina late last (Monday) night.
Helmed by Simon Hawkins, the Atlantic 85 used its searchlights to search the river between the Old Cement Mills and Newport Harbour. The four-member crew also deployed night vision goggles.
But the lifeboat, which had left its Shepards Marina base at 9.54 pm, returned without finding the man just over one and a half hours later. The search, which had been instigated by Solent Coastguards, also involved auxiliary coastguards on the Island searching the banks of the river.
