Monkton Arts held its annual awards ceremony on Wednesday 18th October 2023, to honour individuals and organisations that have made extraordinary contributions to the community and to celebrate young talents in the arts.
The evening featured a diverse array of awards, showcasing the broad spectrum of achievements and contributions in our community, as follows
The Children’s Monkton Arts Prize
An open arts submission available to all Isle of Wight children under 25, was judged by the youngest members of the Monkton Arts community: Joseph and Daisy Sabine (who could not enter by affiliation), along with Camryn Staley, the previous year’s recipient.
Their thoughtful selection recognised emerging young artists and celebrated their creativity.
Judges’ Commendations
These commendations were presented by Mo Martin, the custodian of the Sara Kouvaritakis artworks and sponsor of the Sara K medals.
The commendations were awarded to Laura Hunan, Megan Bailey, and Anna Meredith for their art submissions.
Crowood Press Award in the 2D Category
Sponsored by Crowood Press, this award celebrated artistic excellence with the following winners:
- Joint 3rd Prize: Lauren Hawkins and Ellen Pettitt
- 2nd Prize: Lillian Stafford
- 1st Prize: Lola Parsons (pictured right)
Ryde School Award in the 3D/Mixed Media Category
Presented by Jenna and Dawn on behalf of Ryde School, this award acknowledged outstanding creativity with the following recipients:
- 3rd Prize: Edith Frances Allen
- 2nd Prize: Luisa Vaughn
- 1st Prize: Kit Hayler (pictured left)
The Papa Owl Award
Established by Michael Lilley in honour of his father, an inventor and engineer. This award celebrates ordinary individuals who do extraordinary things. Sarah Redrup talked about the award and presented it to deserving recipients:
- Little Owl: Amy Greenwell
- Papa Owl: Stonecrabs Theatre Company, received by Caroline Diamond, Franko Figueiredo, and Chair Malcolm Marshall.
John Ackroyd Award for Young Engineer of the Year
Keeping the name of the local inventor and engineer alive for future generations, this award was introduced by Meryl Boyd and presented by Chris Horn, the designer and maker of the award.
The honour went to Seth Rayner, a student at the IW College.
Monkton Medals
Monkton Arts recognised and expressed gratitude to two individuals Jim and Loren Thorn, who have provided invaluable support to the organisation over the last year and the arts centre as a whole, as well as all the time they put into other community events.
Monkton Arts continues to be a hub of creativity, community, and inspiration, thanks to the dedication of Jenna Sabine, Dawn Fidler, and the arts community on the Isle of Wight.
