Thanks to Isobel from the National Farmers’ Union (NFU) for this timely reminder. Ed
The NFU is asking motorists to be patient when they encounter slow moving harvest vehicles – and remember farmers are producing our food.
Food on the road
NFU South East crops board chairman Matt Culley says:
“We know that motorists find slow moving farm vehicles frustrating but there’s a very good reason for us farmers being on the roads. August is the main harvest period when we are gathering in the nation’s food – we’re doing a vital job.”
Cereal harvesting
This month farmers are mainly harvesting cereals, particularly wheat, the world’s most important food crop.
Mr Culley adds:
“We’d ask drivers to be patient and drive courteously if they’re stuck behind a tractor and trailer or a combine harvester at this busy time in the farming year. Remember it’s your food on the road!”
