Dark storm clouds are gathering over the Newport offices of the Isle of Wight Conservative Association and neighbour Andrew Turner MP, whose constituency office is a few doors away in Carisbrooke Road.
Some members of the association (how many is not known) are furious Carole Dennett, the MP’s tried and tested partner and paid-for political assistant, has rocked the boat with her much-publicised letter criticising the alleged conduct of council leader David Pugh and senior council officers.
“Mutiny”
A correspondent in last Friday’s County Press likens it to a mutiny, a crisis you do not need when all hands should be manning the pumps to prevent the ship foundering in a stormy sea of spending cuts.
Is Ms Dennett the mutinous ring leader Fletcher Christian with Cllr Pugh as Capt Bligh? The Capt sowed the seeds for the mutiny when, a year ago, he press ganged the lovely Rachel to serve as his cabin boy.
Blinking
Mr Turner MP (merry passenger) has been down in his cabin all week and has just emerged, blinking, on deck and bemused by all the fuss.
One wonders if it will be the mutineers or the captain who will be cast adrift in the open-topped boat this time.
Altogether now:
Fifteen men on a dead man’s chest
Drink and the devil had done for the rest
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.
