Anticipation is rising in Ventnor about the forthcoming Cycling Criterium that takes place this Sunday in Ventnor as part of the NatWest Island Games.
Cyclists (including James Ebdon from Team IW pictured right with the new jersey [more to come on that later today]) will be racing around what we call the ‘Ventnor roundabout’ (Albert St – Pier St – High St – Victoria St) for an hour (35 mins for ladies) and then doing another five laps. It all kicks off from 1pm, so make sure you get here in time to secure a place on the route where you can cheer from – note the details about the free park and ride below.
Women’s race is 1pm and Men’s race is 3pm, awards ceremony at 5pm in the Central car park.
Closure details
There will be a number of road closures, as follows:
- High Street will be closed from Pier Street to Victoria Street.
- Victoria Street will be closed from High Street to Dudley Road.
- Albert Street will be closed from Victoria Street.
- Pier Street, Pier Street will be closed from Albert Street to High Street.
- Pound Lane will be closed from Market Street to Pound Lane Car Park.
- Market Street will be closed from Albert Street to High Street.
The roads will be closed during 8am-8pm to enable the NatWest Island Games Cycling Criterium to be held in Ventnor Town Centre.
One-way restrictions suspended
Traffic will be diverted via:
A3055 Trinity Road, B3327 St Boniface Road, Mitchell Avenue, Ocean View Road, Upper and Lower Gills Cliff Road, Castle Road, Zig Zag Road, A3055 Alpine Road and Church Street.
The one way restrictions in St Catherine’s Street and in Dudley Road will be temporarily suspended during the event to allow access from Madeira Road to St Catherine’s Street premises and Dudley Road and Wheelers Bay Road premises and Car Parks.
Access to will be maintained to Ventnor car parks. Details will be signposted and the approaches to the town.
Access to Ventnor Esplanade will be maintained from the: A3055 Alpine Road / Church Street / Hambrough Road direction during the event.
Parking and general info
Various traffic and parking restrictions will be introduced in certain roads in the Ventnor town Centre area between 8am and approx 8pm on Sunday 26 June 2011 when the NatWest Island Games Cycling Criterium takes place.
The one way restrictions in St Catherine’s Street and in Dudley Road will be temporarily suspended during the event to allow access from Madeira Road to St Catherine’s Street premises and Dudley Road and Wheelers Bay Road premises and Car Parks.
Access to will be maintained to Ventnor car parks during the event. Details will be signposted and the approaches to the town.
Access to Ventnor Esplanade will be maintained from the: A3055 Alpine Road / Church Street / Hambrough Road direction during the event.
Free park and ride
A free park and ride bus service will operate from Ventnor Middle School, situated at Upper Ventnor (on the Ventnor to Wroxall Road) to the Madeira Road (junction with Trinity Road) between 11.30am and 1.30pm.
The park and ride bus will operate back from Madeira Road to Ventnor Middle School between 4pm until 6pm.
People attending the event are advised to use the park and ride service as there is minimal on road parking in the town. It is also likely that town car parks will be full fairly early in the day.
Between 8am and approx 8pm Southern Vectis service buses will operate to and from Trinity Church / Road at the eastern end of Ventnor, near to the bottom of Leeson Road.
Note: The High Street taxi rank will be closed during the event, however a temporary taxi rank will be available in Spring Hill below the junction with Grove Road.
