IOW parkrun #7 Report

Thanks to Jo for the report from Saturday’s parkrun, in her own words. Ed

parkrunnersThe rain may have held off for our third parkrun at historic Puckpool Park, but the event was not without incident on Saturday!

Problems including incorrect bar-codes and a runner leaving without getting his code scanned made it a bit more challenging for coordinator – Ray Scovell – but he coped with his usual enthusiasm and good humour and has provided me with the correct results to follow.

Today saw a turn out of 28 runners, including 6 first-timers, along with our usual excellent team of volunteers including Pete Willmott and Justine Crumplin.

Our winner this week- despite what the results table says! – was actually our regular parkrunner Graham TUCK in 20:13. Unfortunately Graham accidentally used the barcode of another family member and accordingly was shown as Jo Tuck in the results!

parkrunnersTherefore, in recorded second place was first-timer Peter WILKINSON (VM45-49) in 22:06, with another new runner – and IW Athletics Club member – Benjamin McEWEN (JM 15-19) coming in third just 9 seconds later in a time of 22:15. Today’s second place position should have gone to another runner, but this unknown participant left before we could scan his bar-code, and so couldn’t be recorded!

In her 7th consecutive appearance at the Isle of Wight parkrun, our female winner today – for the 4th week running – was young Eden CRUMPLIN (JW14) of the IW Athletics Club, in a time of 23:52. Well done again Eden! If there was a prize for best improver of the week though it would surely go to our second place female today, Elsie LEWIS (JW14). This was Elsie’s 5th parkrun, and her personal best time so far of 26:18, and this race has also put Elsie at number 4 in the ladies’ points table. Our third place lady today was Sophie EASTAFF (SW25-29) in a time of 27:47, just 5 seconds off her PB.

parkrunnersIn the men’s points competition Jay TUCK is still in the lead with 639 points, and is now 45 points ahead of our new second place holder Alan ROWE, with Glyn Jenkins now third with 516.

In the ladies’ points competition Eden CRUMPLIN remains in first place with an 695 points (which actually puts her ahead across both tables!), and Eden an impressive lead of 148 points over 2nd place Shelagh THORNETT of the IW Road Runners. Scarlett FELSTEAD holds third place with 484 points.

This week saw 7 new personal bests, bringing the total since the Medina IW parkrun started to 52. During these 7 weeks we have had 112 runners – representing a total of 15 different clubs – running the equivalent of 237 courses and a total distance of 1185kms!

parkrunnersThe overall male course record holder is still the unregistered winner of our first ever parkrun on 7th May, in a time of 17:41, and the overall female course record holder is still Claire KIELY, who achieved an impressive 20:56 at the same event.

Claire is one of the Isle of Wight athletes taking part in next week’s NatWest Island Games, and we would all like to wish her every success. We hope to see her back at parkrun someday soon.

parkrunnersWell done to everyone who took part today. The course remains at Puckpool next week (26th June) and may have to remain there into July as well as the IW festival, and the heavy rain recently, has turned our beloved Medina/Seaclose course into a quagmire. We will announce the July venues as soon as they are confirmed, and you can stay up-to-date with all the latest news by following our parkrun page on Facebook.
