Sacha Dench, known as the “Human Swan” for her aerial expeditions tracking migratory species across continents, will give a public talk at Ryde School on Thursday 24th September 2026.
The talk marks the launch of the Island Climate Education Hub, a new initiative bringing together schools, educators, community groups and local leaders across the Isle of Wight.
Sacha will draw on her global expeditions and discuss how individuals, businesses and communities can help build a more sustainable future.
Her visit will also include engagement with young people and educators, exploring how climate and sustainability issues can be made relevant, constructive and empowering for students.
Hub aims to connect Island’s climate work
Dr Andrew Lee, founder of the Island Climate Education Hub and Honorary Lecturer at UCL’s Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability Education (CCCSE), said the Hub responds to challenges facing coastal and island communities. He added,
“Climate change presents particular challenges for coastal and Island communities.
“The Hub is about connecting schools, educators and the wider community, sharing practical responses and giving young people the knowledge and agency to help shape a more sustainable future.”
The Hub aims to strengthen links between existing climate and sustainability activity on the Island, while also connecting Island schools and organisations with networks on the Mainland.
Organisers say the aim is to help schools and other groups share ideas, expertise and opportunities rather than working in isolation.
Wider programme planned for the year ahead
Dr Lee said next Thursday’s event is the start of a longer programme rather than a one-off occasion. He said,
“This event with Sacha is our starting point rather than a one-off occasion.
“We expect a wider programme of activities, talks, school engagement and collaborative events to develop during the academic year.”

A drinks reception with light refreshments is also planned at Ryde School after the talk, subject to final confirmation.
