The new leader of the Conservative Party has been announced as Liz Truss.
After Boris Johnson’s resignation was announced on 7th July, the leadership contest was launched and saw ten candidates whittled down to just two.
Over the past few weeks the final two, Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak, have been travelling around the country attending hustings of Conservative Party members.
82.6 per cent turnout
Sir Graham Brady announced the winner today (Monday) live on the BBC.
The turnout for the leadership election was 82.6 per cent of 172,437 eligible votes. 654 votes were rejected.
- Liz Truss received 81,326 votes (57 per cent of the vote)
- Rishi received 60,399 votes (42 per cent of the vote)
Isle of Wight support
Isle of Wight MP, Bob Seely, originally got behind Penny Mordaunt, but switched to Liz Truss after Mordaunt was knocked out of the contest.
During the Leadership contest, leader of the Conservative Group of councillors, Joe Robertson had said he would vote for Rishi Sunak and that the majority of Conservative councillors would be following suit.
