Storeroom 2010’s Cowes Men’s Shed now has a potentially lifesaving addition: a new community defibrillator, made available for public use in case of emergencies.
Installed this week, the defibrillator is located just outside the Shed’s main entrance, making it accessible to anyone in need by calling 999 for an access code.
Match-funded
The Department of Health and Social Care, via London Hearts, is currently running a £1 million match funded Community Automated External Defibrillators Fund, aimed at increasing the number of AEDs in public places.
The installation was made possible through a collaboration of 50/50 funding from the DHSC and the National Lottery Community Fund – thanks to National Lottery players.
Designed to be easy to use
The defibrillator is designed to be easy to use, even by those without medical training. Clear audio and visual instructions guide users through each step, enabling a quick response to cardiac emergencies.
Adam Martin, project leader, emphasised the importance of having an AED available, particularly in a community space that hosts a wide range of people.
“In an emergency, every minute counts. An AED alongside CPR can double or even triple survival rates for someone experiencing sudden cardiac arrest, compared to CPR alone.
“We hope no one ever has to use it, but we’re reassured to know it’s here if needed.”
Comben: Reassuring to know the Shed is prepared
Shed member, Cyril Comben, noted,
“It’s reassuring to know the Shed is prepared.
“We’ve all heard stories of lives saved thanks to quick defibrillator access.”
Cowes Men’s Shed
Cowes Men’s Shed offers a welcoming space for men and women, particularly retirees, veterans, or those facing social isolation, to gather, work on practical projects, and connect with others.
The Shed provides a sense of purpose and belonging, allowing participants to share skills, learn new ones, and work collaboratively on community-enhancing projects. Beyond the hands-on work, it serves as an informal support network where members can talk openly, support each other, and combat loneliness and depression.
The Shed fosters friendships, improves mental wellbeing, and ultimately builds a stronger, more connected community where everyone feels valued and included.
Open to anyone 18+
Cowes Men’s Shed is open to anyone aged 18+, five hours a day, five days a week.
It has a carpentry workshop, craft room, IT area and gardens with raised beds and greenhouses.
People are invited to pop in or phone Adam on 01983 209734 to find out more.
