The site of the former bus station on Ventnor’s Pier Street, which has planning permission for ten residential flats above two shop units, has sold.
The site had been on the market for many years and appeared in several auctions over the last couple of years, but failed to sell there.
However, according to the most recent Auctioneer, the site has now been sold (post-auction) and the sale has been completed.
Persistent fly tipping
Readers will remember earlier in the summer that a group of Ventnor shopkeepers came together to tackle the persistent problem of people dumping their rubbish at the former bus station.
The Ventnor Town council had said that as the rubbish was dumped on private land there was nothing they could do about it.
Frustrated by the lack of action, the shopkeepers put their hands in their pockets and paid for the rubbish to be cleared, benefiting the town as well as the owner of the property – which was up for sale at the time.
Return of fly tipping
The site has remained pretty much in tact since the big clearance of rubbish, however a microwave appeared last week, as well as a couple of bags of black rubbish.
Residents are hoping these two pieces of fly tipping will not encourage others to do the same.
How to report fly tipping
On the issue of fly tipping, an Isle of Wight council spokesperson said,
“If anyone has concerns about the condition of the site they can submit a complaint to the LPA via Planning Enforcement – Service Details.
“To prosecute for fly tipping the local authority require a clear chain of evidence to the person/persons that either tipped the waste or did not follow their duty of care in passing their waste to someone else to dispose of.
“Members of the public can report incidents of Fly Tipping at IW Forms or call Waste Services on 01983 823777.”
News OnTheWight also asked the council whether securing a conviction required witnesses to give evidence in court. The enquiry has been chased and we’ll update here once the council provide an answer.
Section 215 Notice
In our previous reports about the site of the former bus station, News OnTheWight mentioned the Section 215 Notice that had been served on the then-owner back in 2019.
Included in the Section 215 Notice was a requirement for the owner to:
- Remove all boarding from the kiosk.
- Reinstate the glass where broken from the kiosk.
- Clean and decorate the kiosk by rubbing down the painted area, repairs where necessary and then paint to match the existing green and white colours. NOTE any new joinery must be primed and undercoats applied before finishing with gloss paint to match the existing colour.
- To clean the garage doors removing all stains and presence of guano (bird excrement).
- To run down, repair and redecorate the fascia NOTE any new joinery must be primed and undercoats applied before finishing with gloss paint to match the existing colour.
The owner of the site was given 12 weeks to comply with the notice. It appears the Isle of Wight council were satisfied with the works that took place, which they say were completed by 27 June 2019.
“Therefore, we have no open cases for the site.”
