New Premier shop planned for former Coleman’s Carpets in Freshwater

Former Freshwater carpet shop could become Premier store selling alcohol until 11pm

A new convenience store in an Isle of Wight village could sell alcohol until 11pm every day of the week.

Kavin Sivalingam has applied for a premises licence relating to a new Premier shop at 21 Avenue Road in Freshwater, formerly Coleman’s Carpets.

£100,000 investment in refurbishment
His application form says it is hoped the store will quickly establish a regular customer base by providing a valuable community service.

It also points to a complete refurbishment of the premises and around £100,000 in investment.

It says,

“Located in a primarily commercial area of Freshwater, the applicant will be offering a full range of grocery and other general home produce, and this modest application seeks to include alcohol products within the general range of goods available during the normal hours of the store.”

Alcohol sales from 7am to 11pm
Mr Sivalingam is seeking a licence allowing the sale of alcohol, to be consumed off the premises, between 7am and 11pm every day.

CCTV and Challenge 25 among measures
Steps he has listed for promoting licensing objectives include CCTV operating while members of the public are in the shop, staff training, a register for recording all alcohol sale refusals, an incident log and displaying notices requesting patrons are quiet.

The Challenge 25 age verification scheme will also be used.

Consultation closes in November
County Hall’s public consultation on the application ends on 24th November 2026.
