In the last few months, the Isle of Wight Council has awarded funding to 13 new providers who have set up activities as part of the new youth offer in areas across the Island.
These range from anything including outdoor activities, social enterprises, sporting events, youth cafe’s and creative arts.
Although many activities are already underway, the official launch will take place as part of the Isle of Wight College open day where over 500 young people are expected to turn up. Each provider will be at the launch to talk to young people about what they offer.
Jonathan Bacon, Executive member for children’s services, said:
“The council has set aside nearly £1 million over three years to fund youth activities and it is very pleasing we are officially launching the new youth offer.
“The consultation last year told us that young people wanted a diverse youth activities across Island. Following the work that has taken place, we now have a modern and forward thinking youth offer for children and young people, delivered through the voluntary and community sector, which is supported through Community Action Isle of Wight and the council.”
Will Matthews, the Isle of Wight’s Youth MP, feels the new youth offer will bring lots of benefits. He said:
“It is great that there is so much energy and effort being put into providing a new look and modern youth service that meets the needs of users.
“I have already opened the ‘Trend’ youth cafe in Newport, which is one of the new activities, and it is a fantastic project. I am looking forward to seeing the other activities on offer across the Island.”
The youth offer is for young people aged 11 to 19 and up to 25 for those with additional educational needs. The council is working in partnership with Community Action Isle of Wight to award the funding.
