Today the Newport Rowing Club, the longest established rowing club on the Island, is hosting its Regatta.
The action is centred around their club house, unsurprisingly located on the Medina river – west side.
Teams from all over will be gravitating there to take part, racing on the three lanes. We’ve learnt from their site that ‘in terms of coastal rowing regattas, the Newport course is unique due to the absence of buoy turns at the halfway point.’
Finishing line by the club house
Stating near the Vestas R&D centre, Stag Lane, the craft will cover the 1,550 meters of the course, crossing the finishing line just by the Newport RC club house.
There’s going to be lots to watch with only about six minutes between races. They’re hoping to fit in up to 40 heats plus the finals.
With a picnic area by the club house – sounds like a relaxing way to spend the afternoon.
Times
The action starts at 11:15 and will run for a maximum of four and a half hours, due to the tide.
