Newport’s Platinum Jubilee Tree Planting for the Queen’s Green Canopy

Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council and ERMC have planted 48 trees for the Queen’s Green Canopy.

The seven standard Field Maple trees, planted next to the existing woodland in Vectis Field off Wellington Rd in Newport, each represent a decade of the Queen’s reign in celebration of the Platinum Jubilee.

40 additional saplings planted
To help with assisting woodland spread, they have planted 40 additional saplings which are a mix of Field Maple, Willow, Beech, Hornbeam and Rowan to complement the existing trees in the area.

They have also sown a wildflower seed mix specifically for woodland edge areas between the existing woodland and recreational area.

Improving biodiversity
They hope that their collective efforts will encourage the creation of an ecotone in this area, all of which will help improve biodiversity.

There are future plans to create more accessible routes through the woodland and clearing spaces to allow natural regeneration for a better ecosystem.

Additionally, there are plans for an interactive ‘brass rubbing’ trail.

McGinness: An ideal location to introduce new wildlife interventions
Glenn McGinness, ERMC Commercial Manager for Estates and Rangers said,

“ERMC and our ranger team are delighted to have been able to collaborate on this project with the team at the Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council. An area of recreation is an ideal location to introduce new wildlife interventions.

“Wildlife and our natural ecology is something that should be accessible to urban dwellings as well as people living within a rural community.

“Our hope is that by planting and sowing native trees and seed, Vectis Field will offer locals the opportunity to play, but also to enjoy a more biodiverse environment.”

Smart: It’s hoped the field will be used widely by the community
Cllr Shirley Smart (pictured planting a tree at top of article), Vice Chair of Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council said,

“It was a lovely early spring afternoon reflecting the quiet beauty of this corner of  Vectis Fields and as of this year, Vectis Field is maintained by Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council.

“It is hoped the field will be used widely by the community, for example football pitches have been painted and goalposts purchased to allow adult and youth football.”

The map of the Queen’s Green Canopy trees on the island can be found on the Queen’s Green Canopy Website.
