In a unanimous vote, Nicholas Finney, now-partner of Carole Dennett, was deselected as Chairman of the Bembridge branch of the Isle of Wight Conservative Association (IWCA) yesterday (Saturday).
In his place, the Vice-Chair Bill Bristow was elected with a mandate to vote against MP Andrew Turner being the Conservative candidate at the election.
The vote followed the disclosure that Nick Finney had entered a relationship with Carole Dennett, who had previously been Andrew Turner’s fiancée for 10+ years.
Finney: Offered to resign
Finney told OnTheWight that he’d offered to resign if the Bembridge branch would recognise that Andrew was the only viable choice for the election.
Oversaw his own de-chairing
One strange twist, because of his role as Chair, Finney had to chair his own unseating.
Nick Finney’s view on it
OnTheWight asked Nick for some words about his de-selection. He sent back the following:
“The meeting was recorded so I can only hope that whatever is posted on your site is accurate.
“I will be asking for the transcript.
“I made it clear that the only person capable of winning the seat for the Conservative party was Andrew Turner and that despite changes in personal relationships he had my full support as the MP and that I hoped that he would be re-elected.
“I said that if the Branch would recognise that Andrew was the only viable choice, I would willingly resign. In the end I had to succumb to a vote to remove me.
“Alan Wells was present as was Denise Grannum“.
