Norovirus Returns to St Mary’s Hospital

Norovirus, the winter vomiting bug is back at St Mary’s Hospital.

IW NHS inform us that a number of patients have developed symptoms associated with norovirus (viral gastroenetritis) and are advising anyone who may have the bug to stay away from the hospital.

We understand that routine admissions to St Mary’s are continuing as normal and visiting times will be 2-3pm and 7-8pm.

If you do think you have the bug, make sure you wash your hands regularly to avoid spread of the illness.

Limited the spread of infection
Carol Alstrom, Chief Nurse and Director of Infection Prevention & Control, said: “During previous outbreaks, thanks to the co-operation of the public and our staff we have managed to limit the spread of this infection. We have continued to restrict visiting to St. Mary’s Hospital throughout the year to try and reduce the risk of infection being brought in to the hospital.

Carol continued: “It is vitally important for people to keep away from the hospital if they have been unwell recently, especially if they have had vomiting or diarrhoea in the past 48 hours. This is not only to protect patients who are vulnerable, but also our staff who are needed to deliver our services. Viral gastroenteritis is highly infectious. I would discourage parents from bringing young children in to the hospital to visit friends and family at this time. If you do have to visit the hospital for any reason please make use of the hand gel and hand washing facilities provided.”
