Following on from yesterdays talk about Algernon Swinburne which took place at Farringford, tomorrow sees an organ and piano recital at Northcourt, Shorwell by Jo West.
The organ to be played has recently been restored to the house from Kingston Church. It is the original organ which, when played by Swinburne’s cousin Mary Gordon in the library at Northcourt in early 1864 inspired the poet to write much of his greatest work ‘Atalanta In Calydon’ there.
For the concert, the wonderful gardens at Northcourt will be open from 6.00pm and concert-goers are invited to bring a picnic.
The recital will commence at 7.30pm and Professor Myers will be giving a short talk during the interval about the Gordon family and their associations with Swinburne.
All proceeds from this event will be donated to the Julia Margaret Cameron Trust and tickets at £15.00 (to include admission to the gardens and a glass of wine) can be booked from Dimbola Lodge at Freshwater Bay – telephone 01983-756814.
Audience numbers will be limited to seventy so booking is advised – we hear today that a few tickets are still available.
