Number of Isle of Wight residents seeking out of work benefits

Figures published by the Office for National Statistics show that 3,365 people in the Isle of Wight area were claiming ‘out of work benefits’ during October 2021 – these figures also include Universal Credit figures.

That’s a fall of 185 since September 2021, when there were 3,550 claimants, and a fall of 1,365 from October 2020 (4,730 JSA claimants).

Breakdown of claimants
Of those claiming in October 2021:

  • 1,985 were male
  • 1,380 were female
  • 5 were 16-17
  • 530 were aged 18 To 24
  • (300 were aged 18 To 21)
  • 1,860 were aged 25 To 49
  • 970 were aged 50+

That means 4.2% of the resident population of area aged 16-64 is claiming out of work benefits – 0.4% more than the rest of the South East (3.8%), and 0.6% less than the whole of the UK (4.8%).
