On Saturday lunchtime, a group of concerned residents of the Isle of Wight met in St Thomas’ Square to spread discussions about the worldwide Occupy movement.
We’re told that around fifty people in total went along to listen to speeches given by those sympathetic to the mission of the Occupy movement and to protest against public service cuts and job losses.
Isle of Wight MP, Andrew Turner made an appearance, speaking with protesters, as did the Canon for Newport Minster, who gave his blessings.
After the speeches were given, the group discussed future plans and agreed to meet again this week to continue the dialogue.
Exploring alternatives
The day was intended as a one-day protest and despite concerns of some, did not result in an occupation of the square. The group don’t claim to have all the answers, but are interested in exploring alternatives to the current system.
Following the gathering, some of the those attending moved to the Vodafone shop where they protested against the non-payment of taxes. This protest continued at BHS a little further down the road.
We understand that the group will be meeting again tomorrow (Wednesday night). If you’d like to attend, get in touch with organisers on [email protected]
Video report of the event
Joe Briscoe was out with his camera again, capturing and producing this great piece of reporting from the event.
