Why The Lights Are Still On

Readers may have seen Evelyn Knowles’ Letter to the Editor this morning about the winter closure for one our Ventnor public toilets.

light bulbWhen we heard that a public toilet which has been closed for five weeks (for winter) has had its lights running continuously, it raised concern about unnecessary energy use and cost.

We got in touch with the council to find out why the lights were still on.

Only six toilets closed for winter
The council confirmed that out of the 42 Isle of Wight Council run toilet blocks, only six are closed for the winter period.

On the subject of the lights still being on, the spokesperson said, “Council contractors are currently working to visit each toilet closed for winter, where they are draining them of water for the winter and isolating the electrical supply, which takes some time.”

Toilets closed for winter are

  • Mornington Rd, Cowes
  • Seagrove Bay, Nettlestone
  • Pier Street, Sandown
  • Ventnor Park, Ventnor
  • Rylstone Park, Shanklin
  • Yarmouth Common

Good to get such a fast response from the press office. Hurrah!
