Over 60 students were inspired by Olympic athletes who visited Sandown Bay Academy as part of a high powered two day Talent Development Camp this week.

Students took part in practical workshops; Pete Waterfield (Olympic diver) wowed the students with a trampolining session.

Hannah Stodel and Nick Thompson (Paralympic sailors) tested the students’ team work skills with a team building game and Mark Garfoot and Nick Goss (strength and conditioning coaches for Surrey storm) ran a gruelling strength and conditioning fitness session.

Motivational talks
Each of the guests did motivational talks to the students, who listened in awe as they talked about their individual journeys to success. Students said:

“The guests were really motivating and inspiring; they opened my eyes to the opportunities out there if you work hard.” Alex Robertson, aged 16, (talented at rowing).

“It was great to meet lots of inspiring people and it made me realise that you can do anything so don’t give up.” Sian Perry, aged 14 (talented at tennis).

“I learnt that you should never give in, always stay motivated. The trampolining session with Pete Waterfield taught me techniques I can use to help me achieve my goal, which is representing Hampshire at rugby.” Max Fletcher, aged 12 (talented at rugby).

Training sessions with specialist coaches
On day two of the camp students took part in training sessions with specialist coaches in their sporting field. Cricketers went to Ventnor Cricket Club for a session with Ventnor cricketer Rob Snell, John Bridge and Newport Cricket Club’s Jack Bartlett.

Footballers went to East Cowes Vics Football Club for a training session with Vic’s senior team manager Steve Taylor and Cowes Football Club’s Max Draper. Golfers played a round of golf at Shanklin and Sandown Golf Club.

Athletes took part in a training session with Ex GB Steeplechaser Bryony Frost and did a triathlon with Matt Harwood. Rowers had a training session at Shanklin Rowing Club with coach Stuart Johnson as well as Lesley and Garry Walters. Swimmers went to the Heights for a training session with Dave Dutton.

Gifted & Talented PE Co-ordinator, Mr Gareth Bricknell said

“We pride ourselves on our sporting achievements and hold a high reputation not only on the Isle of Wight but in Hampshire too. Pupils within our school who are particularly gifted and talented at PE/Sport are identified and selected to be part of our ‘High Performance Academy’.

“Our programme plays an instrumental role in recognising, guiding, supporting and inspiring talent along their pathway, whatever the destination. The guest speakers were inspirational role models for our sporting stars; they had a fantastic two days and were inspired to achieve their goals.”
