Ventnor lost by 83 runs to Champions South Wilts in Saturday’s opening British Gas Southern League Premier Division clash at Newclose.
After the visitors had raced to 80 from the first 9 overs, Rob Snell (2-21), Adam Wilson (1-29) and young George Willis (2-31) got Ventnor back in the game, only for Joe Cranch with 82 to lead his side to an eventual 271-9 from their 50 overs. 15 year old Dan Cox bowled a tidy spell of nine overs for 40 runs on his Southern League debut.
Hugh Calloway (42), Rob Snell (21) and Alex Glendenning (20) led the Ventnor response but a flurry of middle order wickets scuppered their chances as they slipped to 188 all out.
Second team
A youthful second team lost by eight wickets at Portsmouth & Southsea in Hampshire League Division 1.
Skipper Martin Blackman (33), Tom Stafford (21) and Morgan Perrin (17) were the only batsman in double figures in a total of 118, a target the home team passed inside 17 overs.
Third team defeat
The third team lost by 44 runs to Sarisbury Athletic IV in Hampshire League Regional Division 3 South.
Set to score 214, (Sam McQueen 6-33,) Mark Price struck 68 and Marcus Toms 31 for the home team but despite their efforts, they were dismissed for 169 with three overs remaining.
One wicket victory
There was better news on Sunday with an exciting one wicket victory over Burridge in the second round of the Royal London Club Championship.
Charlie Calloway (4-53) and Marcus Horton (2-50) helped restrict the visitors to 230-9 and in a tight finish, it was a splendid innings of 89 from Martin Blackman and 51 Hugh Calloway that took Ventnor to the brink of victory before the two Nathan’s, Sprengel and Moore, saw their side home.
