Optimist Academy Launches To Train Island Sailing Youth

Aimed at Island children between eight to fifteen, the new academy hope to take these young budding sailors to a level able to compete at the 2010 World Island Youth Games and beyond.

Optimist Academy Launches To Train Island Sailing YouthIf you’re got a basic sailing knowledge and are aged between eight and and fifteen you’re welcome to apply to join the Academy.

Monthly training sessions starting Saturday 7 November will be held. through until April 2010 at the Royal Victoria Yacht Club, Fishbourne, where RYA coaches will guide you through the International Optimist Class Association (IOCA) scheme.

Training will be carried out on a personal basis with individual goals set, training programmes and potentially competition entries set by coaches.

Susie Moore, Isle of Wight Council watersports development officer said: “The Island has many talented young Optimist sailors and we aim to bring them together to develop their skills during the winter months in preparation for top competitions next summer.”

Taking part in the Optimist Academy costs £25 per training session or £140 if all six sessions are paid for in advance.
